From the British Spiritist Medical Association
In the last 16 years, the connection between Medicine and Spirituality has been discussed in several international Congresses and meetings both in Europe and the Americas. These meetings were important attempts to reconnect Spirituality and Health afterthe gap partly imposed by unfortunate political offences committed on behalf of certain religions, resulting in a distancing of scientists and health professionals during the 19th and 20th centuries.
The success of our six previous Spiritist Medical congresses held in London-UK encouraged us to organize the British Spiritist Medical Association (BSMA). Like nine other countries where these associations are already operating, the UK can now count on our Association (we are doctors, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and medical anthropologists). Our starting point is knowledge of French educator Allan Kardec’s philosophy books. We are confident that in the near future, your presence at future Health and Spirituality meetings will greatly contribute to the advancement of the psychic, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of a human being.
One of the goals of BSMA is to meet growing global interest among health professionals, who want to explore possibilities of treating patients using holistic concepts derived from the spiritualist view that body, mind, and soul are integral components of any human being.
More Interest by MDs in Spiritist Medical Congresses
Our first congress held in London in June 2007 was attended by 428 participants, of whom only 7 were doctors and health professionals. The second congress in November 2009 was attended by 150 health professionals, including doctors, nurses, and therapists. And each year the attendance of medical staff increases.
The announcement above came from Peter Fenwick, MD, psychiatrist, F.R.C.PsychUK, British Spiritist Medical Congress Chairperson, and prolific author.
Dr. Fenwick was formerly Consultant in charge of the neuropsychiatric and epilepsy unit at the Maudsley Hospital. He is Co-Director of research at the Department of Neurophysiology, Broadmoor Hospital and Consultant neuropsychiatrist at the London Sleep Centre, running a clinical and forensic practice.
For the last nine years he has been studying magnetic field tomography at the RIKEN Neuroscience Institute, Japan. In the UK, he is researching near death experiences in coronary care units and surveying approaching death experiences in hospices and nursing homes in southern England.

What is Spiritism?
Spiritism is the set of universal laws and principles, revealed to gifted mediums by highly-evolved Spirits in the mid-19th century. It is codified in the works of Allan Kardec. Consider it a branch of Spiritualism dedicated to supporting evolution.
Kardec wrote that Spiritism is a science which deals with the nature, origin and destiny of Spirits, as well as their relationship with the corporeal world. It brings trans-cultural knowledge that allows all people to know where they came from, where they are going, and why they are on Earth. It reveals profound concepts with respect to God, the Universe, the human being, the spirits and the laws that govern life itself. It also reveals the reason for pain and suffering.
